How Easy Is It To Become A US Citizen?

By: Gen Wright

Life is so full of those funny things that just make you chuckle. US citizenship is one of them. There are some people in the US who have been born here who deserve to be citizens about as much as a chimp deserves to be made CEO of Microsoft. And then there are those, fine upstanding people with good heads on their shoulders, who can't become citizens because of one thing or another. So just how hard is it to become a US citizen? Well, in this article, I'm going to cover what I feel are the main stumbling blocks to becoming a citizen.

Probably the biggest is the background check. Because of all the problems this country has had with terrorism, they pretty much put everybody through the ringer when it comes to checking out you, your family and everybody you know. If they even suspect that you have ties to people disloyal to the United States, they'll deny your citizenship in a heartbeat. The is one of the subjective parts of the process that no amount of knowledge can get around.

And then there's the knowledge. In order to become a US citizen, you must have knowledge of our laws and constitution. Let me tell you something, there are kids in our school system graduating today who can't tell you what the 50 states are, let alone point them out on a map. This is a basic requirement for becoming a citizen and only scratches the surface of the test. You also need to know US history in some detail…again, another area where many citizens are lacking.

Add to all the above certain requirements for living in this country for a certain length of time and also living in a USCIS district, and becoming a citizen becomes no small chore. Oh yes, the language. I guess I should have mentioned that. You need to be able to speak, read and write English. Again, this leaves out many of the kids who area already living here as citizens.

Another newly made option to become a U.S. Citizen was established in 2002 by President George Bush the fast track to citizenship program. Already around 32,000 have been grated U.S. Citizenship with this program, with this program it allows non U.S. Citizens to join a military branch of the United States and along with Citizenship grants many additional benefits.

Fair? Maybe not. But those are the requirements and the facts. Good news is, there are resources that will help you get your citizenship. In my signature is a product of one of these resources. I think you will find it most helpful.

No, becoming a US citizen is not easy…but it is so worth it. And the pride you will get when you accomplish it is a feeling that can't be equaled by anything else.
